Looking for home mobility options to help wheelchair users negotiate stairs or simply to reach cupboards to make a cup of coffee? Disabled people have a variety of options available to them when it comes to home mobility and this article looks at the various wheelchair lifts on the market that offer independent living for wheelchair users.

Wheelchair Stair Lifts

Conventional stair lifts for the disabled or elderly consist of a motorized chair attached to a glide runner but these are not suitable for wheelchair users who cannot lift themselves onto the stair chair lift. Wheelchair stair lifts (see picture below) are effectively a platform to carry the user in their wheelchair upwards and can be operated independently as both the ramp and the barrier arms are powered by a motor.

Most wheelchair stair lifts can be folded when not in use so they don’t block the staircase and have built-in safety features such as auto-stop if the lift hits an obstacle on the stairs or a manual over-ride should the power fail.
